Road accidents have claimed 1,679 lives and 1,771 injuries involving 5,684 vehicles Nation-wide from January to September this year, it has been revealed.
MTTU Commander for Ahafo-Ano North District of the Ashanti Region ASP George Amponsah revealed the statistics at a launch of a program for drivers on a theme “Accident free Christmas” at the district capital, Tepa.
ASP Amponsah braked down the statistics to the district level saying that the district recorded 123 road accidents with 411 injuries and 46 deaths last year.
“We have recorded 126 road accidents with 337 injuries and 39 deaths at Ahafo-Ano District this year” he noted.
He said thing could get worse if the drivers are not sensitize most especially during this festive month of December.
He stated categorically that the Nation loses about 418 million dollars annually in caring for accident related cases.
The District Police Commander ASP George Bawa advised the drivers to be mindful on how they speed and also desist from overloading.
Divisional Crime officer DSP Emmanuel Adu-Boahen on his part reminded the drivers not to take in any substances that could get them daze when driving.
He noted that 98 percent of the road accidents are as a result of human error hence the need not to take in anything alcoholic whilst driving.
Chief Superintendent Amo Ayisi on his closing remarks commended various drivers unions at the District for cooperating with the Police in fighting road accidents and advised them to get enough rest before setting off to work.
